I am very interested in creating a permanent magnet motor of 5Hp or more.  This could be used to turn a generator and create power.  I think focusing on motor design is the easiest way for a home owner to make their own power.  They can buy a working generator head from craigslist and mount the new motor to it.

Most motors run at 1750-1800 rpm range, so our final output needs to be at this level or a low speed generator must be created.

The Johnson motor is one such motor that deserves investigation.  This is nice design that can start, stop and vary speed according to the builder.
